Playing through my backlog, you can find some real gems hidden within a pile of hate. For instance, not on this list but only recently played is Odin Sphere. A truly fantastic game which draws upon some of the most interesting mythos in our very own world, with beautiful visuals, an engaging story, interesting characters, and one of the most satisfying end-games I've seen in a game in a very long time. It quickly shoved its way into my Top 5 for Playstation 2 RPGs. As for the pile of hate, well, just look at one of those titles which I've finished. I'm talking about you, Megaman X: Command Mission.
Let's paint a picture real quick. You're walking down the street, minding your own business, a little bored but otherwise okay. Then you get fed up with watching your feet pitter-patter against the pavement and look up. Behold! There, standing in front of you in all his glory, is your childhood hero. The figure you fantasize about adventuring with on a daily basis. You want to be this guy. You want everything to do with him. Just as you flash a big toothy smile and start to move towards him to ask for his autograph, fuckin WHAM. He's run over by a bus because he was stupid enough to be standing in the middle of the street, looking for directions. All that's left of him now is a mangled, lifeless corpse which is now in the process of being bounced between the cars of oncoming traffic.
That's what Megaman X: Command Mission did to me. Now, I've played a large amount of JRPGs, so I can wade through years of bullshit to find a redeeming quality or two in a game. Not this game. I love Megaman as a series. It's my childhood, it's my adolescence, it's the very spark of my video gaming life. I would wade through a literal hurricane of fire and hate to get to the eye of the storm so I could bask in the wonderful sunlight that can only be found within a megaman game. This game has no such sunlight. It is the first game I've found that I literally cannot defend. The music sounded like one track, constantly remixed, it took forever to progress your statitics, and you NEEDED to, the characters made me want to punch my TV, the story was about as cliche as a story could get, and the entire thing REEKED of Saturday Morning Cartoons. I don't know exactly what I was expecting when I went into this. I'm pretty sure I went in expecting nothing, and I was STILL disappointed. Bad show, game. Bad show.
As I continue to chug through my backlog, I'll post reviews on the games I play shortly after I finish them. until then, you get to handle my rants and raves about anything else gaming-related! Additionally, if anyone has any suggestions as to what game I play next, feel free to post them!
Neat.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the world of blogging, SK. Might I suggest a different font size or color? The current combination of black and tiny white font hurts my old woman eyes. XD
